Weekly Quote“What you do for yourself dies with you when you leave this world, what you do for others lives on forever.” — Ken Robinson So...what have I done?Hello, Goodbye If you were wondering "that sounds familiar", it is inspired by The Beatles who I am listening to as I type this. It is the final week of Genius Hour! We made it you guys, I am so proud of us! Thank you to everyone who chose to comment on my blogs, it is greatly appreciated. Another great big thanks to my family for helping me with this project and to those who came along with me. Time truly did fly during these 12 weeks. This week will consist of a summary of everything I managed to get done over the course of 12 weeks. Week 1-3 As we know the first week consisted of the creation of the websites and after that I spent two weeks planning which ended up not being nearly enough. I underestimated how hard it would be to reach out to organizations and get something organized. I was also unaware of the schedules most of these places have. Overall it was difficult and a little stressful but in the end all worth it. Week 4 This week I did a community clean it with Kaylee Lewis. This activity was ideal for my first one because it didn't involve me reaching out to any to get it done. All I had to do was look for a area that had a lot of trash and go there with my supplies. Week 5 By this week I had fallen behind in my blogs. I needed to narrow down my focus so I could accomplish my goals. It was hard planning something that worked with my schedule, Thursday being the only day I didn't have anything to do. I realized that they weekend might be my best bet. Another thing that was a struggle was finding places that are open after school or on the weekends. Week 6 This is the week I donated clothes. It wasn't a hard task because I had already sorted through my clothes months prior. All I had do was get them out the building and organize them. They only hard thing about this week was finding someone who could drop the clothes off for me which ended up being my Aunt. Week 7 Maya and I went to Samaritan Ministries this week. This activity was enjoyable for the most part. Nothing was really tedious about it and everything we had to do was planned out for us so that was good. Week 8 Toy Donation!!!! I loved shopping for little kids. This was another one that wasn't demanding at all. I went to 5 and below and picked up things I thought the kids would enjoy. After that I wrapped them up. Week 9 This week I drove 40 minutes to a town I had never been to before so that was nerve racking. The people I ended up being with were nice and appreciative. Week 10-12 These last two weeks of Genius Hour are just me wrapping up everything. Upcoming Goals...1) Present

Weekly Quote“No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is too much work to do.” — Dorothy Day, Catholic social activist & journalist So...what have I done? These last two weeks I will spend my time getting my slide show ready for presentation on January 3rd. The first thing I need to do is look under Mr. Barkers module to find all the information I need to know about presenting. I've choose Canva as the website to design the presentation. I wanted to find a presentation that fits the theme of my website but isn't over complicated. Here's what I decided on... Now I will fill in the information needed which I am not sure exactly how much is too much. I don't want to rely strictly off memory when presenting because I am prone to forgetting important things. I've also spent time looking at other peoples slides to get different ideas. I'm struggling more than I probably need to with creating the slide shows. Also starting to regret using Canva. Upcoming Goals...1) Final reflection
Weekly Quote“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” — Martin Luther King, Jr., American civil rights leader So...what have I done?Hello and welcome to Week 10. It is truly getting down to the nitty gritty but nevertheless we made it. This is the last week ill be doing something. Week 11-12 will be wrapping everything up. I have texted my family to let them know what I'm doing for this week. I also let the person of the week know to inform their family for contributions. My Nana let her cousin know about my project and they want to give $20. I will pick that up this Wednesday after mock practice then head to the store so I can buy the food. Person of the WeekThis is Londyn McDowell. She is a freshman at DCHS. I let some more family members know about my collection of can food. I will need to check with my Aunt and Nana to see if they have anything, and also given my sister a call to see what she can give. I called the Store House for Jesus to see if I can donate it there. The problem with that is their hours are a little weird, and all end before I get out of school meaning over Christmas break is when I can drop them off unless someone else can do it for me. Update: I went to food lion to buy the food. Cans cost about $0.78+. I also got nonperishables like oodles and noodles. We will do they next round this Saturday afternoon. While in the store I ran into my friends Mom and she asked what I was doing. Turns out she has items she can donate as well which is great! Instead of the food going to Store House for Jesus it will go to a local church in Mocksville. They work a lot with people who struggle with drug addictions. They have this bin you can fill up with food. My mom will be the one to drop it off. Reflection
Upcoming Goals...1)Genius Hour slides
Weekly Quote“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say it’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem, then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.” — Fred Rogers So... what have I done?Hello guys and welcome to week nine! As you can tell from the title I am wanting to do something with a food pantry. The one I have found is called Sunnyside Ministry in Winston. First thing I have to do is call them to see if they offer volunteer times after school hours, and as far as the person of the week goes, I already have someone in mind. Person of the WeekThis is Gage Jackson. He is a Sophmore at DCHS. He is also in Mr. Barkers class. Go check out his Genius Hour: Gage's 12-Week Gym Progression Unfortunately Sunnyside Ministries is only available on Christmas Eve 4:30pm- 6pm. That lead me on a search for a different place. I found Yadkin Christian Ministries, and I gave them a call. The woman I talked to was extremely helpful and nice unlike another place I called today. We discussed us coming this Saturday in East Bend NC 10am-Noon. I let Makenzie know the time so she can check with her parents. Update: Turns out she is unable to come, and I will need to find a replacement. Nobody informed me on how far Yadkinville is away from Mocksville. It was a very long 40 minute drive. The place my GPS took us to was a tattoo shop so I began to get a little worried. Eventually we found the place which was just down the road. I was big time worried because I didn't know much about Yadkinville in general let alone the specific part we were in. I was also not with my mother so she couldn't protect me from anything that could possibly happen. I quickly realized that I had to suck it up and continue with I came here for. Luckily the people there turned out to be nice after a couple of minutes of settling in. Reflection
Upcoming Goals... 1) Week 10
Weekly Quote“There is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it. If only we are brave enough to be it.” — Amanda Gorman So... what have I done?Hello guys and welcome back! Plan for this week is Toys. It only seems right considering Christmas is right around the corner. Before anything can be planned, as always research is needed. Throughout this entire project I have found that to be the most difficult thing. It is especially hard when I call a organization and they don't answer or say they will get back and forget. Those have been my struggles when organizing my plans. Regardless of that I have to remain persistent and dedicated so I can fulfill my goals. The way researching usually goes is me already having an idea in mind and I ask google how I can fulfill said goal. The next part of this process is reading a bunch of charities websites to see if they actually provide services to what you are looking for. After I find one, I will call them to schedule and ask any remaining question the website did not answer. People of the Week
Toy store for Jesus is where we are giving to. I called them yesterday to set up a drop off time and they didn't pick up the phone. After that I sent a email. The woman I contacted said she would call me back the following day. On their website they provide a list of different items you can gift. I called the woman again. Turns out they are currently in Mocksville at the church, and she gave me the option to come Friday but everyone was busy so we'll just have to go to Iredell County. Everyone has bought their toys, and now it is just a matter of dropping them off in Statesville. The drop off time is at 4:30. Because Andrea has Dance after school she wont be able to come but if everything goes according to plan Callie and I will drop them off right after school Thursday. Update: Callie has physical therapy Thursday, instead the drop off will be Friday but because of this I wont be able to come with her because of a basketball game. I emailed the woman I've been talking to to let her know. Another unfortunate update. I emailed the woman to let her know we would be coming Friday instead of Thursday, turns out they close at 1:30 and that wont work. My mother is going to give the toys to Just Hope, the same place we donated clothes to. She knows the person who owns the business. It is located in Mocksville. Reflection
Upcoming Goals...1) Post Blogs
Weekly Quote“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say it’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem, then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.” -Fred Rogers So...what have I done?I'm looking for more programs to volunteer at. I tried contacting the Ronald McDonald house Charities but they were unable to pick up the phone at the moment so I will be waiting to hear back from them. I got the idea of feeding a family from my mothers job, and apparently you can sponsor families. What I am thinking since Christmas is coming around, it would be a good idea to give toys to little kids. If I am not mistaken I may have toys in the building from when I was little but I'll have to check with my mom about that, if not i'll have to purchase some. For now that is just a quick update. Person of the WeekThis is Maya, and she is a junior at West Forsyth High School Reflection
We were unable to take photos during the actual process because sanitation is important. The photos I did get were during the cleaning process before we left. The woman in the bright yellow is my Aunt. While volunteering we were alongside a mother and her two boys, and another woman. Thank you for coming along! Upcoming Goals1)Toy donation
Weekly Quote“There is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it. If only we are brave enough to be it.” -Amanda Gorman So what have I done...I cannot believe we are halfway through with this project, feels unbelievable. Now is the time to stay consistent and focused, no time for slacking. I have two activities in the works right now. If you haven't read week 5 those activities are donating items and volunteering at Samaritan Ministries. Update on feeding the homeless My mother let me know that it will be happening sometime this month It is currently a new day. I just called SM and they will be getting back to me. What I did was call them to see if they had earlier times than the ones listed on their website and luckily they did. On the phone I was able to set up my account so I could volunteer. Because I am under 18, an adult has to be with me so I asked my Aunt if she could be the one to come with. She already volunteered before meaning she has an account set up. After we got off the phone I emailed the man the information needed about Maya(the person who is coming along) so he could set her up an account. He has us scheduled for Sunday the 26th, from 10am to 2:30pm. Moving on to this week's activity Person of the Week Nevasia is a Sophomore at DCHS. She also has Mr. Barker and her Genius Hour is about cooking. Here's a link to her website: Cooking With Nevasia Awhile back I went through my closet to make room for new clothing. In this process I got rid of a lot of clothes, and instead of throwing them away my mom put them in the building. First thing I will need to do is go through the bags. I also let my family know that if they have anything to donate, I will be collecting it soon. As for Nevasia she will be doing the same. I want our clothes to go to a place specifically dedicated to giving them to those in need. This part calls for research. Winston-Salem recuse mission has a clothing ministry on Wednesday from 8:00am - 9:30am, this is a tight and specific window that will have to be done on a day I don't have school or done by someone else. I chose this place because their mission is to provide clothing and more to the fellow women, men, and children in the community. They have information listed on their website but more often than not that isn't always up to date. Because of that I will be calling them. I got all my clothes out the building which ended up being four hefty bags of clothes. After that I went through all of them to make sure there was strictly clothes in them. Then I compacted the clothes to fit in three trash bags. My mother and Aunt also gave clothes to donate. At the end of that I placed the bags in my trunk. On the way to drop them off is when I will pick up Nevasia's clothing. Another possible drop off location is Just HOPE. This place is more convenient because it is in Mocksville and with my week usually being packed, I can just have a family member drop it off for me. The time I am hoping for is Tuesday! I will be calling them to confirm the drop off, and since I wont be able I have asked my Aunt to drop the clothes off for me. Reflection
Upcoming Goals...1) Genius Hour announcements
2) Samaritan Ministries Weekly Quote“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” -Muhammad Ali So...what have I done?Hello guys! Here we are at week 5 almost at the halfway mark. This week's focus will be getting the next 2 activities together. I tried looking into a place in Winston but wasn't very successful. Ill give it another go but if that doesn't work out I'll find other organizations that offer volunteer opportunities. The ones in Mocksville that I've seen so far are related to animals. I'm still waiting for Kaylee to give me her summary which she should have in by tonight. She also has to give me the photos taken off her camera so I can upload them in the photo section of my website. To provide necessities I'll need money. I'm thinking about asking people for $5-10 dollars. I'll also need something to hand these products out in, preferably not plastic. Here are a few items I have in mind -Hand Sanitizer -Baby Wipes -Coat, Sweatshirt, etc -Water Bottles I have the idea of basically doing a on the go hand out, but I am not sure how that will work with homeless shelters, and I think the fastest way to get in contact with them is to call. Reality is I am not being the most productive right now. Actively documenting my process on the computer isn't the easiest thing for me. I get more done with a pencil and paper, and that's exactly what I am going to do. I will insert the photo of my planning paper below. My Aunt informed me of Samaritan Ministries. So far the most current times listed on their website are in December and that's too late. I'm going to give them a call to see if they have anything open sooner. The person I want to bring on this activity is Maya. If they have an available spot open I will be there. For the donation activity I want to bring Nevasia with me. I asked her if she or her family members have any items they can donate. I will start sorting out my clothes and shoes tomorrow while also making sure Nevasia is getting hers together. As soon as everything is sorted we will take them to different donation facilities. Future activity involves the collection of money to purchase items needed. To be continued... Upcoming Goals...1) Call SM
2) Get clothing out of building 3) Sort clothes 4) Figure out where each section is going 5) Post week 5 6) Start week 6 Weekly Quote“Anyone who thinks that they are too small to make a difference has never tried to fall asleep with a mosquito in the room.” -The Dalai Lama So what have I done...Welcome to Week 4 of my Genius Hour Project!!!! This week I'll actually be doing something, although it might not be what you expect. I will be picking up trash around the community. Taking care of our environment is just as important as taking care of the people on it. One thing I haven't thought about is the supplies i'm going to need. -Trash bags -Gloves -Trash picker (Optional) I have 2/3, I'll either need to find someone who has a trash picker or buy one. I think after each activity I'll do a review so I can further reflect on it. Along with letting the person who came along give their thoughts on what we did. Person of the WeekThis is Kaylee Lewis, she is a Junior at DCHS. Reflection
Upcoming Goals...1) Plan the next activity
Weekly Quote“If you cannot feed a hundred people, feed one.” -Mother Teresa So...what have I done? This week will consist of setting dates and getting in contact with people. This will be a struggle for me because I am not too fond of planning things with others, I rather do it by myself. My mom has an organization in mind we could provide food for so i'm getting her to check about that. My sister is a teacher in Charlotte and I asked her about volunteering with kids. My mother is going to let me know of the next available date for when I can feed the homeless. I'm thinking chicken and rice would be a good fulfilling meal. I also let her know of my time frame I need to do this by. I have added more friends to the list of bring along's. Upcoming activity plansOn Sunday the 29th I will be picking up trash around parks, highways, etc. I will be doing this with my cousin, Kaylee Lewis. I need to form a list of multiple areas to go to, which will be posted on next week's blog. I want this to be a part of my making the world a better place project because I think taking care of the environment also falls under this category. In order to try and spread kindness to people on this earth, I also have to be kind to the earth itself. Upcoming Goals...1) Having at least 3 activities with a date set to them before the week is over
